They just met. Now she has vowed to save him.

After the sun turned, Madelyn fled north to escape the riots and the encroaching glaciers. As long as the world was ending, she wanted to live her final days in the one place she had always been happy—her grandmother's cabin. She survived the Roamers, the scavengers, and the wildlife, but she can't escape her fear of dying alone.

She left behind this note
"Gather my bones, if you find them. If a bear hasn’t dragged them off, or a wolf cracked them for my marrow. My skull goes on the wall with the others. Any other remains can be planted near Sacrifice Rock. That’s where my grandfather is buried, and where I dug up the skull of my beloved grandmother.
Her sweet eyes were still wise and kind, even when I only imagined them from their hollow sockets. She taught us so many things—how to hunt, trap, and fish. She should have taught me how to live alone. I never learned the trick of scaring away the ghosts. They won’t shut up and leave me in peace. I guess it's time to join them."
—Madelyn

This series is continued in "Madelyn's Mistake" and "Madelyn's Last Dance".

Madelyn Nephew eBook Ike Hamill

Ike Hamill is so prolific that I would have to stop reading other authors in order to keep up. So this review is sort of late to the party for MADELYN'S NEPHEW. Once again, Hamill is off and running with something completely different. This one seems to be (MADELYN'S NEPHEW is book one of a planned trilogy so sneaky old Ike might do something to alter veracity of this statement in the next volumes) straight up dystopic post-apocalyptic sci-fi. I must confess that I was more than a little confused at the outset because in typical Ike Hamill fashion, nothing is spelled out clearly, and one has to try and pick up on the various clues left lying about to determine where and when the story is set. I won't spoil that for you, figure it out for yourself.

Madelyn is a middle aged woman who lives by herself in a smart house out in the middle of the woods. She and her house are completely self-sufficient. But it is clear that outside danger lurks. The precise nature of the danger is not clear, nor exactly how many dangers there are. Where is everyone else? Who knows? Exactly what has happened? Who knows. Madelyn exhibits some signs that she may have a little trouble distinguishing past from present and reality from imagination, so the reader is also confused about what is real and what isn't. At least at first. There are plenty of flashbacks that detail earlier episodes in Madelyn's life and some of her family and people in her life. One day her nephew shows up and that triggers a cascade of events that eventually lead to Madelyn and a couple of new friends making a long and dangerous trek back to what's left of civilization.

MADELYN'S NEPHEW is more slowly paced than many of Hamill's older works, perhaps because it is one of his (very) rare novels that is intended from the outset to be the first of a trilogy. But it is fast enough to keep one's interest, especially if, like me, you are splitting your attention between reading the story and trying to figure out what the heck happened to the world, how, when and why. I expect that most of those questions will be answered in the next book, MADELYN'S MISTAKE, that is already downloaded onto my iPad and ready and waiting for me as soon as I post this review.

Madelyn Nephew eBook Ike Hamill Reviews

LOVED THIS!!! Excellent read. Fascinating concepts in a world that is going crazy. The character creations are full without going in to way too much information. I really, really like Madelyn, even with her flaws. Thank you Mr Hamill for an amazing adventure.
IH has written about the end of modern time as we know it. The story, primarily, is about a young woman and her brother. He arrives at the farm and last two days before her joins the ranks of the many dead. The nephew shows up and overcomes the woman and after the time spent. In the underground bunker she appears to drift away. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I first discovered Ike Hamill when I read the Extinct book. I liked the characters of Madelyn's Nephew and the flow of the story. I like a story when I don't end up skimming over pages that I find boring or over written. I have already downloaded the next two books in the series.
If this was not a series, the best ending was about 85% through the book. As a psychological thriller, the story hit the mark with unexpected twists and turns. I really never got invested with our subject. She was just too messed up and unlikable. There was no cliffhanger, but a reasonable way to encourage you to follow her adventures. Very, very few editorial issues, so from that standpoint was a pleasure to read.
The storyline is ingenious, the writing is superb, and the hook grabs you from the first chapter and never let's go. So many twists, turns, and surprises. Ike is a very talented writer who doesn't force every literary intention but allows you to figure them out by yourself. A very rewarding read. I'm on to the next in the trilogy.
The most intriguing aspect if this book is figuring out the clues and determining if Madelyn is living in reality. Trying desperately to trust her own instincts, she is faced with one confusing thing after another. Can she trust her own ears, eyes, hands, emotions? She is obviously damaged, but how deep does that run. She unintentionally uses a coping mechanism that leaves her in a constant state of bewilderment. The narrative leads you round and about, dropping subtle hints along the way. Eventually, Madelyn will have to face her demons to know what's real and what's not.

Her interaction with her nephew is brilliant. The back and forth between the two is lively and entertaining. She rides a rollercoaster of emotions and questions in her relationship with him.

The writing is in true Hamill style clean and clear, attention to detail, complete plot and fully fleshed out characters. And as always, the sense of being dropped into the story and puzzling through until you know whats happening. Kinda (in this one).

The drawbacks are simple. It feels a little slow in places. Although, points of history are dabbed in here and there, too much was left unsaid, even with this being part of a trilogy. And though there was an end, it felt kind of sloppy and rushed. Very much unlike Hamill.

Overall, it is a good book. You won't be disappointed in the least. But be prepared to take your time as to not miss anything.
... and it will definately NOT be my last! Only Stephen King has ever caught and kept me in a book like Hamill does, and I love it!

I read a great deal in many different genres, and have found many authors who have kept me avidly reading, but few like Hamill did with Madelyn's Nephew.

His prose is clean, no mistakes, misleading ideations, nor a hanged novel ending to attempt to draw readers into a series. It could easily be a stand alone novel, but the depth of the turned world he has created, along with the richly developed characters and intriguing potential for expansion into future works has captivated me completely.

I enjoy the prospect of reading more of his books... as soon as I get some sleep after reading this one in one sitting. Lol.

Pick up this book and get comfy... you will be unable to put it down until you close it after the last page is read.
